We’ve all heard that practice makes perfect. In our industry you’re one haircut, color, massage, manicure or facial away from being better at what you do. The more you practice and hone your craft the better you become.
This philosophy is easy to adopt with something we are passionate about. Funny thing is, when it comes to something we either don’t like or think we will struggle to understand, we shy away from it or simply ignore it.
For many salon and spa professionals, this is a common approach when it comes to learning the business side of the industry and especially so when it comes to managing finances, tracking sales & expenses or following a budget.
This was my world years ago and I ended up running my business into bankruptcy. Math wasn’t my strong suit so I avoided it. I thought that so long as I kept working hard and had more clients then things would work themselves out. This couldn’t have been further from the truth.
I had to learn the hard way. Luckily, I found a business coach at the right time and hired them to help me turn things around. The road was tough and I had much to overcome. Mainly, I had to learn that I wasn’t financially fit.
I had to look inward and see that my thoughts and beliefs were getting in my way. Once I began to shift them I was able to begin to take the steps to put the right financial systems in place, learn how to understand what those numbers meant and what steps to take to improve. Overtime, this helped me to grow my sales, to pay off debts and to become profitable.
Look at it like this, when it comes to running a profitable salon and spa, nothing is more important than understanding and managing your finances.
I liken it to my recent journey taking on cross fit. I’m learning so many new techniques in the gym and doing things I never thought I could physically do before. But guess what? The biggest breakthroughs have come with me overcoming my limiting thoughts that I couldn’t do something.
This is the same experience I’ve seen time and again with salon owners I coach to learn their numbers. I’ve gone on to not only overcome my own financial obstacles; I’ve coached over 150 salons to do the same.
