6 Ways To Handle Resistance In A Meeting

6 Ways To Handle Resistance In A Meeting

March 9, 2017

If you’re a leader in your business, then you spend time preparing for and conducting meetings. Let’s face it, bringing together the diverse personalities in the business can be creatively rewarding but also a potential powder keg!

The last thing you want is to spend precious time preparing an agenda only to see it derailed as someone hijacks the meeting.

Here’s an excerpt from my upcoming book, Interdependent Leadership: Creating A Salon Culture of Inclusive Growth that addresses how to handle these situations when they arise!

Resistance will happen so expect it, be graceful yet firm. Take the lead and follow these steps:

  • Participant brings up the issue.

  • You address or state that now isn’t the time and you will address it later or personally after the meeting.

  • The participant continues to address it.

  • You patiently yet firmly state that you will not address it then.

  • They continue to resist

  • You invite them to either let it go for now or leave the meeting. Take this stand and do not back down! Hold your ground.

After the meeting address the issue. If the person or persons strongly resisted and it emotionally impacted you, let them know you will address it later in the day or the next morning when you have calmed down. Be honest and do not let your emotions govern your leadership!
